Patagonia Rock Climbing Ambassador Timmy O’Neill

Climbing and adventuring are through lines that connect me to new ideas, places and especially new people in my life. So on that note, I participate in my community with mentoring children, and assist both friends and strangers in their needs on an immediate level – if something needs to be done/solved I am available. Desert rats is a documentary about rock climbing that takes place in The Wall and Canyonlands National Park. It is a part of the series First ascent – The series (7/7). It features Rob Pizem, Alex Honnold, Nick Martino, Steph Davis, Steve ‘Crusher’ Bartlett, Chip Wilson and others. Dean Potter tribute is a documentary about rock climbing that takes place in El Capitan.

One of my best moments of community work is the release the 175 page, Paradox Sports Adaptive Climbing manual. Recounting stories from his decades of cutting edge expeditions, Timmy’s dynamic storytelling engages and inspires the listener. O’Neill combines his daring adventures with social impact to share the wisdom and unique perspective gleaned from a life lived on the edge of wild landscapes. O’Neill is originally from East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, one of seven children. After whitewater kayaking as a child, he began climbing as a teenager, scaling the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge and climbing in Yellowstone. He left Temple University after one semester and worked at the Old Faithful Gift Shop in Yellowstone, and in Yosemite. He climbs buildings, including the Chicago Tribune Tower, without ropes.

In 2001, along with Dean Potter, O’Neill set the-then speed record for the “Nose” climb on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, climbing it in three hours and twenty-four minutes. He also produced “Return2Sender”, which won Best Climbing Film from the Alpine Club of Canada. He narrated and co-wrote the non-fiction comedy “Across the Atlas”, about an adventure in Morocco that turned out to be less epic than the participants hoped. One of his comedy personas is “Dr Steven “Death Zone” Clark”, in his “Mallory Revisited” play. My Right Foot follows 22 year-old world-renowned British climber Leo Houlding around the globe for nearly a year as he struggles to recover from a serious accident and reach the top level of his sport again. We join Leo 4 months after an ill-fated expedition to Patagonia, where he fell and shattered the bones in his right foot. 15-year-old Ashima Shiraishi and 16-year-old Kai Lightner are the leaders of the next generation, already taking the sport to the next level.

It was directed by Peter Mortimer in 2015 and produced by Sender Films. Timmy O’Neill is a professional rock climber, first ascensionist and public speaker. One of my most difficult and audacious climbing days was climbing three Grade VI big wall in Yosemite National Park in a 24 hour period. We started on the 2,000 ft northwest face of Half Dome, then a run over over to the east face of Mount Watkins, 2,000 ft then ran out to the road and drove down to El Capitan to climb the 3,000 ft Nose route.

It’s not hard to see why when you realize just how he has completely surrendered to the bliss that the gift of life has provided him. He’s chosen to spend that life on top of mountains, in rivers, on beaches, in oceans. He’s chosen to spend life in front of laughing audiences and behind a rocking drum kit. A polymath with endless gifts and talents, Timmy is a rare gem of a human being. An accomplished comedian, musician, and outdoorsman, Timmy is equally at home summiting some of the world’s most techinical climbs as he is embracing the often daunting internal journey of self-realization. Did we mention Timmy is a world-class kayaker with multiple first descents? Or did we mention that he is Co-founder of Paradox Sports, a non-profit dedicated to providing people with physical disabilities the opportunity to pursue and be successful at any and all human powered sports?

It features Timmy O’Neill, Amanda Salzman and Sean O’Neill. Outside of his athletic achievements, Timmy is always giving back. Timmy’s vitality and zest for life continues to inspire others as he pushes on to live a life of meaning. O’Neill has been featured in several climbing films including Return2Sender, Front Range Freaks, and most recently 180 Degrees South.
