Although some versions employ to prevent unlawful reception by scanner radio receivers, which operate in the 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, or 6 GHz ISM bands, the receiver is frequently used for multiple microphones. Some types employ (two antennas) to prevent transmission interruptions due to actor movement. Some inexpensive (or specialized) devices employ light, but they need a straight line of sight between the microphone and the receiver.

A wireless microphone, sometimes known as a cordless microphone, is one that does not have a physical connection attaching it to the sound recording or amplifying equipment to which it is connected. It also goes by the name “radio microphone” and has a tiny, battery-operated transmitter built into the body of the microphone. This transmitter sends the sound wave from the microphone to a reception device nearby, which recovers the audio. The receiver device is wired to the other audio gear. In one design, the portable microphone body houses the transmitter. In a different design, the transmitter is housed in a separate device called a “bodypack,” which is typically fastened to the user’s belt or tucked under his garments. A “lavalier microphone,” sometimes known as a “lav,” is a tiny microphone attached to the bodypack and connected to it via a cable.
